Far from a Despicable Me

posted by mrice

This newly released movie encompasses two of the biggest trends in Hollywood; animation and 3D. It also has the “adult” factor we are seeing more and more in animation. No longer are cartoon-style films just something parents are drug along to see by their small children. Hollywood has been adding a lot of heart to animated movies. I can count on one hand the number of people I know who didn’t at least tear up in last year’s hit Up. Just because they’re not life-like figures doesn’t mean they can’t tug on the heartstrings. Despicable Me is setting up to be another quality animation of this type.Steve Carell plays the voice of the super villain, Gru. He has devised a plot to pull off the biggest heist in human history; he wants to steal the moon. However, there is a catch in his plan when three orphaned girls find him and want him to fill the fatherly role in their life. You can probably already imagine the emotional bond that will form and the change that will occur in the heart of the villain. A handful of other stars are the voices for these animated characters including Jason Segal, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews.Though you may be tired of hearing 3D advertised for practically every movie that comes to theaters, Hollywood filmmakers are beside themselves with all the 3D possibilities brought on by new technology. If the numbers are any indication, this movie is definitely one to see, grossing over 56 million in its opening weekend taking the number one spot and held strong at number 2 in its second weekend.
